What Is Extraordinary Ones?
Extraordinary Ones is a MOBA. For those who are unfamiliar, MOBAs are a sub-genre of RTS games that broke into the mainstream because of the Defense of the Ancients mod for Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos in the 2000s. In such games, each interested individual controls a single character with unique capabilities who becomes more and more powerful over the course of a match, which can combine with other interested individuals controlling other characters to create a team that is more than the sum of its parts. Generally speaking, a MOBA match is won when one team manages to destroy some kind of central structure belonging to the other team on the other end of the map. However, MOBA matches can have other winning conditions as well.
What Can Players Expect from Extraordinary Ones?
In a lot of respects, Extraordinary Ones is pretty much what most MOBA veterans would expect from a MOBA. For example, interested individuals can choose from more than 30 characters with unique capabilities, which is a number that is expected to increase on a regular basis so long as the game remains profitable enough for its developer to pour resources into it. Likewise, the goal of the game is indeed the destruction of the other team’s central structure after the destruction of the defensive structures guarding it, which is about as generic as it gets for MOBA titles. There are some unusual elements such as the springboard launch from the player’s chosen lane, but these are not what anyone would consider to be revolutionary changes. Instead, if Extraordinary Ones lives up to its name in any respect, that would be its presentation.
Simply put, Extraordinary Ones is a very anime-looking MOBA, which is something that might interest fans of anime and anime-related media. For starters, its setting is one of those fight-happy high schools that are so common in shounen anime, which explains why the principal’s office is the central structure that must be destroyed in order to claim victory. Similarly, the characters take inspiration from a wide range of characters in a wide range of anime. For proof, look no further than the maid doubling as a witch whose mop doubles as a broom, which isn’t even mentioning the frog-shaped sock puppet. By this description, it should be clear that Extraordinary Ones isn’t exactly shy about smooshing its inspirations together, which is something that will appeal to certain segments while alienating others.
As for monetization, Extraordinary Ones is pretty standard in this regard as well. There is no purchase price. Instead, the game makes its money by selling boosters, cosmetics, and the like, meaning that interested individuals can play for free so long as they don’t mind not having everything that they can get their hands on. In this as in other MOBA titles, it is a good idea for interested individuals to understand exactly what they are and aren’t getting if they are thinking about spending real money for its in-game counterpart.
Is Extraordinary Ones an Extraordinary Game?
On the whole, Extraordinary Ones is not an extraordinary game. It is a standard MOBA title done up in an anime costume, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Having said that, Extraordinary Ones does have one feature of note in how it has been very proactive about doing crossovers with famous anime series. As a result, if people want to play characters from anime series such as My Hero Academia, Durarara!!, and Mob Psycho 100, they might want to check it out sooner rather than later. Of course, that is very much contingent on them actually having some interest in MOBAs as a whole because otherwise, Extraordinary Ones is probably not the way that they would want to be introduced to the sub-genre.
